Care That Helps Students Thrive

Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics believes every child deserves access to quality healthcare, regardless of their family’s circumstances or barriers to care.

By bringing healthcare services closer to students and families, we help children stay healthier, more confident, and better prepared to learn, grow, and succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Our work is rooted in compassion, accessibility, dignity, and the belief that healthier students build stronger communities.

Our Purpose

Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics was created to ensure that children and families facing barriers to healthcare can access the services and support they need. By partnering with schools, healthcare providers, and community organizations, Healthy Kids helps children stay healthy, succeed in school, and reach their full potential.

Our Story

Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics was created from the simple but powerful belief of Johnson County pediatrician, Dr. Marguerite Oetting: healthcare should be easier for families to access.

Community leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, and advocates recognized that many children were facing barriers that prevented them from receiving consistent medical and mental healthcare support. Transportation challenges, financial stress, busy schedules, and limited access to healthcare often left families with difficult choices.

By partnering directly with schools and trusted community health organizations, Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics was established to bring compassionate, student-centered care closer to where children already spend much of their day.

Since its founding in 2007, Healthy Kids has continued working to strengthen student wellness, support families, and build healthier futures for children across the Iowa City community.

What Makes Healthy Kids Different

We help remove barriers that often prevent families from accessing healthcare services.

School-Based Support

Care located within or connected to schools creates greater convenience and continuity for students and families.

Whole-Child Approach

We understand that physical health, emotional well-being, and academic success are deeply connected.

Our partnerships with schools, healthcare providers, nonprofits, and supporters strengthen the care available to local families.

Community Collaboration

Our Impact

Every visit, conversation, and connection matters.

When students receive the care they need, they are better able to focus in school, participate in activities, build confidence, and develop healthy habits that can impact their futures for years to come.

In 2026, we served:

  • Over 640 unduplicated patients

  • 1,081 appointments

  • More than 1,657 vaccinations

  • 81 patients in the dental clinic

  • 24 patients with vision care

Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics is proud to support students and families with care that strengthens not only individual lives, but our entire community.
