Helping Students Stay Healthy, Confident, and Ready to Learn

Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics provides accessible healthcare services for students and families in the Iowa City area, helping remove barriers to care so children can stay healthy, supported, and successful in school and life.

Too Many Children Go Without the Care They Need

For many families in our community, accessing healthcare is more difficult than it should be. During the 2024–25 school year, 8.3% of students in the Iowa City Community School District were uninsured at registration.

Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics serves children and families who often face significant barriers to care, including:

  • Children who are uninsured or underinsured

  • Families with high deductibles or copays

  • Families new to the Iowa City community

  • Families who do not speak English as their first language

  • Families without reliable transportation

  • Parents who work during typical clinic hours

  • Parents who do not have paid time off for medical appointments

  • Families navigating complex healthcare systems

  • Parents facing significant medical or mental health challenges

When children cannot access healthcare, dental care, or mental health services, the effects extend beyond their health. Students may miss school, struggle to focus in class, experience pain or untreated conditions, and fall behind academically and socially.

Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics help remove these barriers by bringing healthcare services closer to where children learn, grow, and thrive.

Family Support & Resources

Dental Care

Preventive and restorative dental services that help children maintain healthy smiles and avoid pain, infection, and missed school days. Services may include examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, fillings, extractions, and referrals for specialized care when needed.

Vision Support

When Students Receive Care, Futures Change

Behind every appointment is a child who can focus better in class, a parent who feels relief, and a family that knows they are not facing challenges alone.

Healthy Kids School-Based Clinics help students stay healthier, more confident, and more prepared to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
